The Vancouver Writers Fest and guests invite you to gather in celebration of famed artist and author Robert Bateman’s birthday, as well as the publication of his memoir, Life Sketches. The event will be hosted by The Globe & Mail’s Marsha Lederman and will include presentations by Elizabeth May, Member of Parliament and author of Who We Are, and Brian Brett, author of Tuco and winner of the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize. The event will also feature biologist Bristol Foster and artist Robert Davidson.

Robert Bateman is perhaps best known for his stunningly detailed wildlife and nature paintings. His realistic painting style focuses on wildlife in its habitat, inviting viewers to closely observe the natural world. His recent book Bateman: New Works  features more than one hundred full-colour reproductions depicting both North American and international mammals, birds, and other wildlife, as well as black-and-white details and sketches. He is one of Canada’s best-known artists and has been recognized by the Audubon Society as one of the 20th century’s “heroes of conservation.” He is also the recipient of numerous awards and honours, including Officer of the Order of Canada.

David Suzuki and Robert Bateman have worked together to promote environmentalism in Canada and beyond. Bateman illustrated David Suzuki’s Tree: A Life Story, and recently participated in the Blue Dot Tour, a cross-country journey to support the idea that all Canadians should have the right to drink clean water, breathe fresh air, and eat healthy food.

We hope fans of David Suzuki will join us in celebrating Robert Bateman on June 19th.

Tree: A Life Story

“Only God can make a tree,” wrote Joyce Kilmer in one of the most celebrated of poems. In Tree: A Life Story, authors David Suzuki and Wayne Grady extend that celebration in a “biography” of this extraordinary—and extraordinarily important—organism. A story that spans a millennium and includes a cast of millions but focuses on a single tree, a Douglas fir, Tree describes in poetic detail the organism’s modest origins that begin with a dramatic burst of millions of microscopic grains of pollen.
